Sophons represent one of the most powerful tools used by alien civilizations to observe humanity.

Background

Of all the technologies imagined across the Three-Body Problem trilogy, the sophon is the one most carefully grounded in real physics — while also being one of the most speculative in its application. It draws on genuine concepts about the structure of spacetime, the nature of subatomic particles, and the theoretical possibility of extra dimensions to construct something that is unsettling precisely because it doesn't feel entirely impossible.

To understand sophon technology, you have to first understand two ideas from contemporary physics: the structure of protons, and the hypothesis of compactified extra dimensions.

Protons and Extra Dimensions

A proton is not a simple object. It is a composite particle, made up of quarks bound together by the strong nuclear force, and its internal structure is still an active area of research. Current physics describes protons in three spatial dimensions — the same three dimensions we experience in everyday life.

But certain theoretical frameworks, particularly string theory, propose that space has more than three spatial dimensions. The additional dimensions are thought to be compactified — curled up at scales vastly smaller than anything we can currently probe — which is why we don't perceive them directly.

Sophon technology, in the story, works by reversing that compactification for a single proton. The Trisolarans possess the capability to unfold a proton from its natural three-dimensional form into a higher-dimensional surface — something like inflating a tiny ball into a vast membrane. At that scale, they can etch circuits onto the surface using techniques analogous to lithography but operating at unimaginable precision. The circuits they inscribe are complex enough to constitute a complete computing and sensing system.

Once the circuitry is complete, the proton is refolded back to its normal size. The result: a particle that is, to any ordinary measurement, a standard proton — but that contains within it a functional machine.

Capabilities

Sophon technology enables several capabilities that prove strategically decisive in the story.

Ubiquitous surveillance. A sophon can pass through essentially any matter — walls, shielding, the Earth itself — unimpeded. Sophons are deployed in pairs, with quantum entanglement allowing instantaneous communication between them across any distance. One sophon near Trisolaris and one on Earth means that observers on Trisolaris have a real-time view of events on Earth, with no possibility of interception or jamming.

Scientific interference. Particle accelerators work by accelerating particles and analyzing the results of collisions. A sophon can pass through an accelerator at precise moments and alter the trajectory or state of target particles, producing false results without leaving any detectable trace. This means the Trisolarans can corrupt the foundations of human physics research at will — preventing humanity from developing the understanding needed to counter Trisolaran technology, or even to understand what is being done to them.

Optical projection. Sophons can be directed to interact with the light-sensitive cells in a human eye, producing visual phenomena that appear entirely real to the observer but are not detectable by any instrument. This allows sophons to act as display surfaces for Trisolaran communication — essentially projecting images and text directly into a human's visual field.

Strategic Implications

The sophon technology transforms the strategic balance between humanity and Trisolaris in ways that go beyond simple surveillance.

Because every communication — digital, printed, spoken — can be monitored, no conventional strategy can be kept secret. Any plan that is communicated is a plan that Trisolaris knows. This is why the Wallfacer Project is created: not as a conceit, but as a logical response to the specific nature of sophon surveillance. The only defense is a strategy that exists nowhere but inside a human mind.

Because the most advanced particle physics experiments can be silently corrupted, humanity's scientific progress is effectively frozen at a critical moment. The gap between human and Trisolaran technology, already enormous, cannot be closed because the tools needed to close it produce unreliable results.

The Sophon as a Message

The deployment of sophons also carries a psychological dimension. The Trisolarans inform humanity that they have been deployed. This is deliberate. The Trisolarans want humanity to know it is being watched — not because they have to tell us, but because the knowledge itself is paralyzing.

It is a display of power: we are so far ahead of you that we can tell you how we are controlling you, and you still cannot stop us.

In this sense, sophon technology is not just a surveillance tool. It is a statement about the nature of the power differential between a Type II civilization and a species that has not yet fully explored its own solar system.
